Being alone

I know many people who like to work alone. In fact, even I like to work alone. Working independently gives you more time to focus and genuinely focus on issues. It helps you in learning a new skill and improving existing skills further. But we cannot deny a fact that working in team or collaborating with team members is a stronger skill that can strengthen your PR skills, understand people better, help you progress and guide you with firsthand knowledge and advice.

Intelligent people love working alone because it allows them to be in tune with their inner creative selves. They can introspect different issues in a field and even think out of the box. When there are so many people around, it is difficult to think quietly and creatively because there’s chaos all around.

Working alone puts you in control of decision making and workflow, which eliminates interpersonal conflicts and can increase productivity and job satisfaction.

Teamwork involves working together with a group of individuals towards a common objective. It emphasizes collaboration, cooperation, and mutual support. On the other hand, individual work requires working alone, taking sole responsibility for the task, and making independent decisions.

A study revealed that intelligent people prefer to be alone, tend to have fewer friends and they choose to be less social than those who scored less on the intelligence scale. Interestingly, they are contended fully in content and in sync with secluded lifestyle.

The more people work together, the more they can accomplish during each day. As a result, the quality of the final product is usually better – even if individual efforts are not wildly superior to each other.

Being a loner

I think anxiety may also lead to a preference for independent work. People with anxiety may feel more comfortable and in control when they are working alone. Anxiety can make people feel vulnerable and exposed, and working independently can provide a sense of safety and security that may be lacking in a group or team setting. This can be especially true for people who suffer from social anxiety, who may find it difficult to interact with others in a professional or social setting.

Also, people with anxiety may be more sensitive to criticism or negative feedback. When working in a group or team, it can be difficult to avoid criticism or negative feedback, which can be particularly challenging for people with anxiety. By working independently, people with anxiety may be able to avoid these types of situations, which can reduce their stress and anxiety levels.

I think some people having problems to work with group. They want things to go their ways and they can do better alone. They are not the flexible ones because they have their own systems, and they want to stick to these. Someone said: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with other. I want to go fast and far at the same time. It’s left to an intelligent individual’s choice whether to work individually or with a group. There are also geniuses, the creative mind level is higher than others, but they still need help from others to finish their projects.

Some people are loners. They are self-engrossed and prefer to be left alone.

The dictionary definition of ‘insubordination’ is the refusal to obey someone who is in a higher position and has the authority to give instructions and directions to achieve results. Insubordination is an act of disobedience against authority.

Insubordination increases stress and anxiety for the person working in authoritarian position and for the other employees. The manager feels unappreciated by his subordinates. He and his team both experience distress because some employees in the team purposely don’t take the load which often gets shared by others in the team members. Poorly performing employees can negatively impact ability of an effective manager.

Insubordination starts mainly by manipulation. Some employees try to damage reputation of their bosses by bad-mouthing them to others and filing irrational and frivolous HR reports. These employees go to the extent of speaking poorly of their superior to even outsiders such as suppliers, clients, marketing channels as well as other industry professionals. Many competitive managers have lost better opportunities in their careers just because of defiance by few subordinates in their team. Many employees in an organization refuse to perform a lawful, ethical, and judicious directive from a manager in spite of the directive being clearly understood and acknowledged.

When an employee publicly disrespects a leader, other employees begin to view the leader as unproductive and that reputation can affect the leader’s status with other team members. Regular clashes between the manager and his subordinates spoil relations of the manager with other business partners. Antisocial behaviours such as speaking negatively about others behind their back kill chances of those people. Subsequently, more and more employees may begin to show defiant behaviour.

Organizations must address disrespectful and rude employees in time:

It is lways a good practice of organizations to address discourteous behaviours of employees as early as possible. When insubordination is tolerated, manager’s morale gets affected and the disrespectful employee gets more confidence and feel justified in carrying on their impolite behaviour. In addition, such behaviours can be very damaging to workplace morale and emotional wellbeing.

When confronting an employee about his or her behavior, it is vital to present with specific examples of rudeness or insubordination. It doesn’t make sense in trying to retain a rude, disrespectful employee; fire the worker and hire a replacement.

However, if the employee has potential, particularly if the quality of his work is good, HR must offer the employee counselling and give a warning of intolerance. Listen carefully what the employee has to say. Sometimes employees behave unruly because of various kinds of stress. Often we see some an employee who seems sullen and non-communicative may be unhappy about something in their private life. They need attention and cooperation.

Organizations must treat all employees respectfully. The culture comes from the top. Tolerating insubordination when some employees have made mistakes or have violated workplace rules, sets wrong example. The managers and supervisors are accountable for good and bad results. They must be trained to uphold standards of professionalism. This means treating workers with respect and taking responsibility for how one presents concerns, challenges and criticisms.

During the interview and recruiting process, attentions must be paid to employee’s behaviour. Organizations must have employee handbook and on-boarding process in place to reinforce employees’ commitment to civility and respect. Politeness and respect to each other and that subordinates is a must. Individuals who find it difficult to look at the brighter sides of life complain and spoil the entire work culture. They themselves hardly work and they influence others. Workload distribution becomes undemocratic; it leads to a decline in workplace morale and productivity suffers.

Mental fatigue

Mental fatigue is a state of tiredness that sets in when your brain’s functioning drive gets depleted. We experience mental fatigue usually as the result of prolonged stress; it gets prolonged by a variety of factors, such as multitasking, pending work, challenging events in life, a demanding job, demanding spouse, kids, and also mainly because of procrastination.

If mental fatigue is ignored, your brain just won’t function right. It is also described as brain fog. If it is not tackled in time, it becomes difficult to concentrate on even simple daily tasks; while reading newspaper you might just glare it blankly, you finish a task but keep lingering on even after it’s finished, you may find yourself repeating a task again and again. Things which you would have finished off keep piling and you become more irksome, you get impatient with co-workers, you pick arguments with family members, friends etc. If not treated in time, mental fatigue can become acute or chronic. Acute fatigue is short-lived and is relieved after a brief period of rest. Most of us experience acute fatigue during an afternoon slump or at the end of a particularly hectic day. Acute fatigue is normal because after a good sleep in night, you feel fresh and recharged the next morning.

However, if left unaddressed, acute fatigue can snowball into chronic fatigue and ultimately lead to burnout. Identify the root causes of your mental fatigue and take proactive steps to manage it early on.

What causes mental fatigue? It is complex to explain. It is usually caused by multiple causes such as too much of physical work, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalances, bad relations, too much of cognitive load and physical illness. The cognitive overload can take the form of intense focus on a single task over an extended period of time, for example, the case for those chess grandmasters that burn 6,000 calories in a day which often results in mental fatigue of the players. We all spend lot of efforts in spreading our attention across too many things; we take so many decisions throughout the day. We wake up every morning with decisions to make right from what to wear, what to eat, and of course the perennially difficult decision of heading to the gym, health regime. And once you clock into work, the decision flood gates open. By the time you are winding down for the night, you have made an average of 35,000 decisions….isn’t this unbelievable?

We grasp so much of information and process it, the emails we answer, the tasks we need to keep track of, the daily chores; our mobile phone keeps us so busy that taking care of all of this makes us mentally tired. Worrying about a task can be as mentally taxing as actually doing it. That means even while we are procrastinating, we are taxing our brain.

Luckily, there are steps you can take to manage both the physical and cognitive sides of mental fatigue.

Weather it is physical tiredness or mental fatigue, it can be tackled by taking good rest. But if it is mental tiredness that impacts both body and mind. So when you are stressed, pause. Because stress requires a longer pause to resolve the inner wound. And, even when things are fine learn to take a pause. We take our strength for granted, our inner strength is so important, it should never be overlooked. Factually, the stress response is supposed to be short-lived because it wears down our body, your health, and our energy. It also impacts our emotional intelligence and decision making. When we get tightly wound up, we tend to react to situations than to respond with reason.

I have constantly been a fast mover for as long as I can remember. My mind moves faster and my body automatically maintains speed with my mind. I don’t like to waste time, I get things done quickly, and finding proficiencies and shortcuts in work and life brings me great contentment. The thing which I am not good at is taking a break or even just a short pause between moments. That is really what this post is about; it is a reminder to self and any other fast movers out there about the significance of taking space between moments.

Resting increases productivity, it works miraculously. We feel fresh, we feel vital, our confidence increases, and therefore a good pause is most essential. Listen to your mind, when it asks for a pause, take a pause. Sometimes you need to stop in order to get ahead. Pause to ask yourself what, how, when, whom, and why you are doing things; these questions can be tell exactly what you need in order to continue your progress. Other times, you may simply need a break to recharge and prevent exhaustion. If that occurs, you are going to spend a lot more time recovering than if you had taken a break in the first place.

So whenever you lag behind, press the pause button. If you are all times working on yesterday’s work, you will never be able to give time to today’s work, it’s time to take a pause and catch up. If you are experiencing monotony and feel your quality of work is reducing, pause. The importance of pausing applies to all areas of life. I used to associate stopping and quietness to laziness. I generally thought it was a big waste of time. But in fact, it’s a way to recharge and reset your energy, which can actually help you become more productive.

I am sure many of you must have experienced this: you are sleeping, you feel weight on your body, at times on chest alone…….you can’t move your arms and legs, and you can’t even move your lips for calling for help. You’re not sure who or what is pushing on your chest. You feel some unknown presence there; you feel something strange, something uninvited, and something creepy. You are half awakened and half in sleep… you are aware of the surrounding. At times, we feel as though we are falling from height… It is frightening hallucination, to which you are unable to react. This condition called Sleep Paralysis.

Sleep paralysis is a observable fact during which an individual is unable to move during sleep, because of paralysis like condition, and perceived physical experiences, such as a pressure on chest, pressure on whole body, straggling of throat etc.. in which one only gets frightened. Though you realise that you are breathing, you find yourself nearly frozen in bed. People have variety of scary experiences. After some time when the sleeper gets over it he/she feels weakness/tiredness.

Sleep deprivation and stress are the main cause for this condition. Genetics also plays its role for this. Sleep paralysis is also linked to disorders such as trauma, obstructive sleep, due to drugs, migraine, narcolepsy (which is a long-term neurological disorder that involves a decreased ability to regulate sleep), sleep apnoea etc. Also, sleeping in a fixed supine position (means lying horizontally with the face and torso facing up) increases the chance of sleep paralysis. The fundamental reason is believed to result from disrupted REM sleep, (rapid eye movements, more dreaming and bodily movements) when the sleeper experiences a general inability to move muscle which prevents him/her from acting out their dreams.

The good news is sleep paralysis is not something to be worried about; it does not pose risk to those who experience it, although it seldom causes significant distress, https://www.cdhfinechemical.com/cdh_data/ambien-zolpidem/. These episodes last from several seconds to several minutes, but the sleeper feels as though he is experiencing it for long time. SP is experienced quite frequently in even the most normal of sleepers. In fact, it is said that over 50% of people will experience at least one episode of it during their lifetime.

In addition, and more common case of SP is state of mind of individuals. If this is the case for you and you are experiencing SP quite frequently, you definitely should to look into the treatment.

These are few steps you may follow to improve sleep hygiene. ‘Sleep hygiene’ means habits that help you have a good night’s sleep.

Keep bedtime and wake-up time consistent. Even on holidays and weekends maintain the consistency.

Ensure a comfortable sleep environment, with suitable bedding and sleepwear and a clean, dark and cool bedroom.

During daytime, get good sunlight and daylight exposure.

Avoid working or studying in the bedroom.

Avoid taking a nap after 3 p.m, also, avoid your afternoon nap more than 90 minutes.

Do not have a heavy evening meal, or eating within 2 hours of going to bed.

Do not watch a disturbing or thrilling movie/TV episode before going to sleep.

If you are used to take an alcoholic drink have it early.

Exercise daily, but not within 2 hours of bedtime.

Try listening to some relaxing music it works wonders.

Leave your phones and other electronic devices outside the bedroom.

If you are taking anti-depressants try the following:

Reduce intake of stimulants.

Practice meditation or regular prayer.

Instead of sleeping on your back sleep sideways.

Remember this, ongoing stress and disturbance in the sleep cycle can have serious health effect. Healthy sleep habits are not just necessary for sleep paralysis management, but for overall health and wellness.

Counseling at workplace is a proactive human resource initiative

Though there has been no definition of stress which is universally accepted, this makes measuring stress difficult. People have different problems, different challenges to face in their normal life. What seems problem for one person might be luxury for another. Hence, people have very different ideas with respect to their definition of stress. Stress can be felt on physical, mental, or emotional level as nervousness, strain or tension. Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize.

Peter Drucker one of the greatest management thinkers said “In a few hundred years, when the history of our time is written from a long term perspective, it is likely that the most important event the historians will see is not technology, not the Internet, nor e commerce. It is the unprecedented change in the human condition. For the first time – literally – substantial and rapidly growing number of people will have choices and for the first time they will have to manage themselves and society is totally unprepared for it”.

Different people since the beginning of mankind e.g. Parents, teachers, friends, elders, etc have used counselling in some way or the other. They would help the stressed person with empathy and lots of affection. Also, it was to the family doctor that people went most frequently. Those family doctors knew each family member and would treat the person to ease out the stress. The family doctor was like a family member who would rarely advise members to visit specialists. They were well equipped to treat.

Mental and physical health issues at work affects more than the person under stress. Managers may be able to identify employees who may not be performing as effectively as they once were. This could be because of increased workload or other productivity-related issues in the workplace, but could just as easily be caused by unhealthy relationships with other colleagues. A stressed employee’s efficiency levels drop. That employee becomes problematic which will continue to impact not only the employee’s efficiency but his/her surrounding in the workplace.

Workplace counselling thus has gained importance and momentum of late. Providing psychological therapy for stressed employees can have many beneficial effects. Counselling in the workplace can help reduce warning sign of anxiety and depression, improve mental health, lower levels of sickness and increase job satisfaction and commitment. It provides an effective method of understanding the pressure caused by occupational stress and offers a supportive remedy, https://www.cdhfinechemical.com/cdh_data/xanax-alprazolam/.

Although the provision of counselling services is not available in many organizations through employee schemes and programmes, a counselling appointment can be obtained through a GP (General Practitioner). Offering formal counselling sessions to stressed employees help them feel valued, and it also enables the individual to identify the cause of their problems and issues. Counselling can help increase staff morale, boost confidence and self-esteem, improve productivity and efficiency and create a more relaxed working environment.

Also, counselling helps people identify issues, difficulties and problems caused by thoughts, feelings and emotions and encourages them to respond and make progress towards resolution. Whilst a little bit of stress provides workers with the motivation to increase productivity and efficiency, too much stress can be counterproductive.

Besides employee’s personal life issues he/she may also face issues related specifically to the work place, such as matters like career development, discipline, performance, relating to customers or clients, promotion, redeployment, transfers, redundancies, retirement, harassment, etc. There might be problems individuals have in relating to others in the work place, either as individuals or as part of a team. Other problems may lie in relating to customers, to bosses or to those in authority in general. Bosses might also have problems in relating to their juniors. Some may agitate for job or career changes within the organisation because the problems make them unable to cope with their work. They may even decide to leave their job and this will create difficulties as new people will have to be found, recruited, inducted and trained to replace them. This is an expensive and time-consuming exercise for an organisation.

Pressure at work place and at home, lack of support system such as elders and the mismatch of expectations are the reasons for disharmony between couples & there is hostility.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has set up a network “Maitree” set up in 2005 to counsel its 30,000 employees. Under the initiative, 90% of TCS offices organize family get-togethers and activities such as ball dancing and yoga classes and theatre workshop, helping employees working long hours keep healthy.

“At Wipro, to reduce employee stress after long working hours, HR initiated “Mitr”, an in house counselling service, set up in 2003, trains employees in counselling to help out colleagues in distress.

At Infosys a peer of group of volunteers called “Samaritan Network” who are trained in barefoot college spend time listening to, empathising with, supporting and counselling fellow employees, helping them to cope with life’s challenges mostly which are personal in nature. These volunteers perform the counselling activities over and above their normal work load. So far over 1300 employees have been benefited by the help provided by the Samaritan Network at Infosys. The network members help people with severe depression, metal health related problems, and employees with suicidal tendencies. The Samaritan Network members constantly assist the Human Resource Department.

The example of Infosys tells us although counselling skills training in a work environment will help employees and staffs overcomes many everyday pressures. It can provide managers with improved listening skills, improved communications skills and effective language patterns, ability to defuse anger and frustration, ability to identify limitations, and to work with others at resolving difficulties and the skills and knowledge to minimize stress in the workplace.

The ability to counsel is an important skill for managers and caring co-workers. Organisations that have people trained in counselling will be better able to handle their people issues better than those that do not. Workplace counselling is an employee support intervention that is usually short term in nature and provides an independent, specialist resource for people working across all sectors and in all working environments. Giving all employees access to a free, confidential, workplace counselling service can potentially be viewed as part of an employer’s duty of care.

Counselling is an effective and preventive people management strategy for organizations to help employees in better managing stress, personal issues or work related problems.

Benefits to the organization:

Reduced employee turnover, burnouts, absenteeism & accident-related disability.

Enhancement in employee performance & therefore increase in productivity.

Counsellor can play the role of a business partner to manage behavioural problems brought about by organizational changes.

Thus help employees and employers both equip with living skills.

Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

If you are stressed out and don’t have time for a facial massage, or visit to a spa –here’s what you can do: cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that will reduce stress in your face, It works great on wrinkles too!!

Recline on the sofa with a slice of ice-cold cucumber over each eye. The cooling sensation helps sooth red and tired eyes; while the high water content works to reduce puffiness and can even eliminate dark circles. Just do it today.

Another use of the cucumber’s amazing attributes is that it acts as a diuretic. The next time you feel bloated – wash, but don’t peel and slice a cucumber. Add the slices to a jug of ice water and drink it down. You can easily shed with this your water weight. Try it; it’s simply amazing.

If you have just finished a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth, hold it with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

Cucumber is a natural astringent, so a cucumber facial is cleansing and soothing. Puree half a cucumber in your food processor or blender; add a few mint leaves to it, a tablespoon of lemon juice and an egg white. Mix them all together and then apply it onto your clean face. Leave for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water. Follow with a splash of cool water to close skin pores.

Recently the New York Times published loads of information and praises for cucumber as part of their “Spotlight on the Home” series highlighting maximum usage of it in our daily life. I give here under one raita recipe which is delicious and appetizing, very easy to prepare.

Ingredients:

1 cup plain yogurt

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Small portion of chopped fresh dhaniya (coriander leaves)

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 chopped green chili

2 medium cucumbers peeled and diced

Salt & sugar for taste

Whisk yogurt, add diced cucumber, limejuice, chopped green chili in a small bowl. Stir it by adding salt and sugar for taste. Garnish it with chopped coriander leaves and grounded cumin seed powder. Season it with half table spoon tempered oil and mustard seeds. It tastes amazing!

Because cucumbers are mostly water, they are low in calories. Even, a large cucumber contains less than 100 calories. You will not find any other natural element loaded with such immense nutritional value. Store cucumbers in your fridge always, and consume them regularly.
