Studying international business theories is essential to steer, strategize, and succeed in a globalized economy, enabling professionals to understand complex trade dynamics, manage cross-cultural risks, and identify international growth opportunities. These theories provide the analytical tools needed to optimize supply chains, enhance competitiveness, and formulate effective, sustainable global strategies.

The theories can be classified into: Classical Country-Based Theories: Mercantilism, Absolute Advantage, Comparative Advantage and Heckher-Ohlin Theory. Modern Firm-Based Theories: Country Similarity, Product Life Cycle, Global Strategic Rivalry and Porter’s National Competitive Advantage.

Mercantilism

It is a form of economic system and nationalist economic policy that is designed to maximize the exports and minimize the imports of an economy. It seeks to maximize the accumulation of resources within the country and use those resources for one-sided trade.

It is also known as “commercialism,” which is a system in which a country attempts to amass wealth through trade with other countries, exporting more than it imports and increasing stores of gold and precious metals. It is often considered an outdated system.

The biggest example being Passed by the British Parliament in May 1773, the Tea Act was a mercantilist policy designed to bail out the struggling British East India Company by granting it a monopoly on tea sales in the American colonies. It allowed the company to ship tea directly to America, bypassing merchants and reducing costs, while enforcing a three-cent tax to assert Parliament’s taxing authority. The Act aimed to save the financially troubled British East India Company by allowing it to dump 17 million pounds of unsold tea in American markets, creating a practical monopoly. Ships carrying tea were also turned away or had their tea destroyed in New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston. The Tea Act was effectively the world’s first corporate bailout (often helping by paying money in difficult situation) the act was designed to save the East India Company from bankruptcy.

Mercantilist economic policies rely on government intervention to restrict imports and protect domestic industries. Modern-day mercantilist policies include tariffs, subsidizing domestic industries, devaluation of currencies, and restrictions on the migration of foreign labor.

Modern-day mercantilism in India is reflected in policies prioritizing domestic manufacturing, reducing import dependency, and fostering a trade surplus, often termed “neo-mercantilism” or economic nationalism. Key examples include the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, high tariffs on imports, and the decision to stay out of the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) trade agreement to protect domestic sectors.

Absolute Advantage

The ability of a country to produce more of a good with the same resources than another country is absolute advantage. India has an absolute advantage in the production of wheat over China and China has an absolute advantage in the production of cloth over India. Absolute advantage in international business occurs when a country can produce more of a good or service with raw material or technology which the country enjoys. It represents superior efficiency due to factors like better technology, climate, or lower labor costs.

Due to abundant oil reserves, Saudi Arabia can produce oil at a much lower cost and in higher volume than most countries, giving it an absolute advantage. China has historically held an absolute advantage in textile production due to a large workforce, lower labor costs, and efficient manufacturing capacity. Japan possesses an absolute advantage in high-end electronics manufacturing owing to its advanced technology and highly skilled workforce.

Comparative Advantage

It is the ability of a country to produce goods at a lower opportunity cost than another country by achieving economies of scale. Reductions in average costs due to increased production levels. For example, China’s low labor costs give it a comparative advantage as a manufacturer over many Western trading partners. South Africa has a comparative advantage in mining because of its mineral wealth.

Brazil has a comparative advantage in coffee production due to climate, while South Africa holds an advantage in mining due to mineral abundance. Germany and Japan have a comparative advantage in automobile manufacturing and high-end machinery due to advanced technology and highly skilled labor, despite higher production costs. India has a comparative advantage in software development and IT services due to a large pool of educated, English-speaking, and cost-efficient professionals, which the U.S. imports.

Eli Heckscher and Bertil Ohlin Theory

It is also known as factor-proportions theory. Both prepared a theory explaining international trade patterns by focusing on differences in factor like cheap labor, raw material, and capital between countries, suggesting that countries export goods using their abundant, cheaper factors and import goods which are scarce.

Bangladesh specializes in clothing (labour-intensive), while Germany exports machinery (capital-intensive). A country with abundant labor (e.g., India) tends to produce and export textiles, while a capital-abundant country (e.g., Germany) specializes in automobile production. While South Korea was historically labor-abundant, it successfully transitioned to capital-intensive exports (electronics) by investing in infrastructure.

Modern & Firm based theories:

Raymond Vernon’s Product Life Cycle (PLC) theory

This explains how trade patterns shift as products evolve from innovation in developed nations to mass production and standardization in developing countries, moving through introduction, growth, maturity, and decline stages. The theory explains how a product’s production and trade patterns shift over time, eventually leading the original innovating country to become an importer of the very product it invented. As the name suggests, this theory talks about a product that goes through different stages. This theory only focuses on the developed nation, not on the developing nation. According to this theory, when a product is in its early life cycle stage, all the raw material and the labor used in making and producing that product belong to the place where the product has been invented or produced. But when that new product is introduced in the world market, then its area of origin shifts to different places

PC Personal computer) were introduced to world by US; its mass manufacturing in low-cost Asian countries declined production in US. Now US purchases Pcs from Asian countries.

Country Similarity Theory (Steffan Linder)

Trade within similar development stages (intra-industry trade) occurs due to similar consumer preferences. states that countries with similar income levels, consumer habits, and industrial development trade similar, high-quality manufactured goods with each other (intra-industry trade). Key examples include massive trade in automobiles between Germany and France, or electronics between the US and Canada.

Global Strategic Rivalry (Krugman/Lancaster)

Firms gain competitive advantage through innovation, R&D, and economies of scale, influencing trade patterns. Competition for leadership in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and 5G networks, often involving sanctions, export restrictions, and investments in critical infrastructure.

Porter’s Diamond Model

National competitive advantage stems from four interconnected factors: factor conditions, demand conditions, related/supporting industries, and firm strategy/rivalry. Germany’s automotive industry, showcasing strong national advantage through skilled engineers (Factor Conditions), demanding consumers wanting high-performance cars (Demand Conditions), a robust supply chain (Related/Supporting Industries), and intense rivalry between BMW, Mercedes, and Audi driving innovation (Firm Strategy/Rivalry).

Agency theory was independently developed by Stephen Ross in economics and Barry Mitnick in institutional management during the mid-1970s. The most cited work, however, is by Michael C. Jensen and William H. Meckling (1976), who formalized the theory by defining agency costs and creating a framework for reducing conflicts of interest between principals (like owners) and agents (like managers).

Agency theory explains the relationship between a principal, who delegates authority, and an agent, who acts on the principal’s behalf. In a corporate setting, the principal is typically the employer or shareholder, while the agent is the manager or executive responsible for running the organization. A manager plays a crucial role by acting as a link between the employees and top management. Their primary responsibility is to provide leadership and guidance to a team or department, ensuring organizational goals are met through efficient planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling of work. Key responsibilities of the manager include:

Setting individual employee goals

Setting individual employee goals is a core responsibility of a manager, but it should be a collaborative process. Managers work with employees to align individual goals with the company’s strategy, provide ongoing feedback, and involve them in goal setting to foster engagement and development. This approach ensures that individual targets not only support team and organizational success but also contribute to the employee’s personal and professional growth. By translating company strategy into clear, relevant, and achievable objectives, managers help employees understand their role in the broader mission and drive meaningful performance.

Delegating tasks effectively

Effectively delegating tasks is a core responsibility of a manager, crucial for optimizing time management, fostering employee development, and enhancing overall team efficiency and productivity. Good delegation goes beyond merely assigning work; it involves strategically selecting tasks, aligning them with the strengths and capabilities of the right team members, providing clear instructions and the necessary resources, and fostering an environment of trust. Additionally, it requires holding individuals accountable for their results while maintaining open lines of communication and providing ongoing support to ensure successful outcomes.

Monitoring and evaluating employee performance

Effectively monitoring and evaluating employees is a core responsibility of a manager, essential for setting clear expectations, identifying areas for improvement, and fostering continuous development and engagement within the team. This process involves setting clear goals, defining specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives that align individual performance with organizational priorities. Continuously observing employees’ work to assess progress, behavior, and adherence to standards in real time. Maintaining accurate records of performance metrics, achievements, challenges, and behaviors to support objective evaluations. Providing continuous feedback and coaching.

Motivating and inspiring the workforce

Effectively motivating and inspiring employees is a key responsibility of a manager, as their ability to foster a positive work environment, provide clear guidance, and recognize achievements directly influences productivity, engagement, and overall organizational success. Managers can accomplish this by understanding individual employee needs, communicating a compelling vision, setting achievable goals, offering meaningful incentives and development opportunities, delivering constructive feedback, and cultivating a culture of trust and collaboration.

Making critical decisions

Making critical decisions is a central role of a manager, as managers are responsible for choosing the best courses of action to resolve issues, achieve organizational goals, and guide teams. This involves a process of identifying problems, gathering information, analysing options, selecting the best solution, implementing it, and reflecting on the outcome to ensure company growth, effective operations, and overall success. Managers make countless daily decisions, from assigning tasks to managing budgets, all of which impact the organization. Decisions on new strategies, partners, and resource allocation directly influence the company’s growth and competitiveness.

Acting as a communication bridge between employees and top management

A manager acts as a crucial communication bridge between top-level management and their team of employees, ensuring that strategies from above are translated into actionable plans for the team, and that employee feedback, concerns, and performance data are communicated back up to senior leadership. This role involves clarifying expectations, fostering transparency, advocating for team needs, and ensuring smooth communication flow to maintain understanding and alignment within the organization. Managers interpret higher-level business goals and strategies from senior management, transforming them into clear, achievable operating plans and tasks for their employees. They communicate company policies, objectives, and changes to their team, making sure that employees understand the bigger picture and their role within it.

The principal-agent problem

In agency theory, the principal delegates authority to the agent, focusing on the potential conflicts of interest that may arise when the agent pursues their own self-interest instead of the principal’s. This situation is termed the principal-Agent Problem and is especially relevant in corporate governance, where shareholders (principals) rely on company managers (agents) to run the organization. A major issue in this relationship is passing on few wrong points which is called information asymmetry where the agent has more information about daily operations or specialized knowledge than the principal. This imbalance allows the agent to make decisions that the principal may not fully understand or control, sometimes to the detriment of the principal’s goals.

the agent holds more information than the principal, creating an imbalance of power and understanding. The outcome of such conflicts is known as Agency Loss: the reduction in the principal’s welfare due to the agent’s self-serving actions.

Key Concepts of Agency Theory:

Principal: The party that delegates authority and expects certain tasks to be performed on their behalf. Commonly, this is the shareholder or owner of the business.

Agent: The party entrusted to act on behalf of the principal, typically a company manager, whose duty is to make decisions that serve the principal’s best interests.

Principal-Agent Problem: The core conflict where the agent’s personal incentives do not align with the principal’s objectives, leading to potentially harmful decisions.

Information Asymmetry: A situation where the agent holds more information than the principal, creating an imbalance of power and understanding.

Agency Loss: The welfare reduction suffered by the principal when the agent’s decisions diverge from the principal’s best interest.

Abstract

Every day, experts across industries are provoked with importance of artificial intelligence and its growing impact. People are concerned about their jobs and salaries about whether they will be continued in the job or not. They feel concerned that their work will be taken over or rendered archaic by the ever-growing and ever-evolving plethora of AI tools and systems. Organizations constantly require labor with a variety of skills. The demand for specific skills changes over time due to technological advancements, industry shifts, and evolving business needs. This demands a dynamic workforce capable of adapting to these changing requirements.

The proverb “adapt or perish” is a strong simile for organizational survival in a constantly changing business environment. It emphasizes the importance of adaptability and flexibility for organizations to thrive and avoid becoming obsolete. In essence, businesses must be able to adjust to new technologies, customer demands, and market trends to remain competitive.

Organizations sometimes remove employees due to a mismatch between their skillsets and the evolving needs of the business, or because of a change in company strategy or structure. This can involve layoffs, restructuring, or offering employees alternative opportunities within or outside the company. Companies like Airbnb, Amazon, Google, LinkedIn, and Meta have all announced layoffs or reductions in their HR and recruitment strategies. This indicates a shift in focus of companies prioritizing people with newer skills and cost-cutting and streamline operations during challenging economic times.

Shiv Nader is credited with being one of the pioneers of the computing and IT industry in India – founding HCL Technologies in a garage in 1976 as a company making calculators and microprocessors. Under his guidance as chairman for more than four decades, HCL has continued to grow in the ever-changing IT landscape – transforming from its original hardware roots, manufacturing the country’s first indigenous computers, into a more comprehensive software services organisation. In fact, HCL is one of the few global IT companies founded in the 1970s that is still alive and kicking today. Nearly 50 years later, and HCL is valued at US$11.8 billion and is among India’s largest software services provider employing more than 222,000 people in 60 countries worldwide. The 79-year-old Nadar stepped down as chairman in 2020 and handed the reins to his daughter Roshi Nadar Malhotra, though he continues as chairman emeritus and strategic advisor.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you. The father of EI Daniel Golman says managers with emotional intelligence (EI) achieve objectiveness through their self-awareness, which promotes productive, motivated, and equal workplaces There are five key elements to EI: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Late Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Group, is a well-known example of an Indian industry leader with high emotional intelligence. His leadership is characterized by empathy and ethical and compassionate leadership. By 2030, they would be replaced by a more cautious and advanced technology called smart glasses. Being tech-savvy is incredibly important today. It’s no longer just about having a general understanding of technology; it’s about possessing the skills and knowledge to effectively use and adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape, which is essential for personal, professional, and educational success.

Watson’s theory focused on observable behavior as the primary subject of psychological study, rejecting introspection and mental processes. He believed that behavior is learned through conditioning and can be manipulated by environmental stimuli, emphasizing the role of external factors over internal ones. His experiment famously known as ‘the little Albert experiment’, conducted by John Watson and Rosalie Rayner in 1920, aimed to demonstrate that fear could be conditioned in humans through classical conditioning. The experiment involved a nine-month-old baby, Albert, who was initially not afraid of a white rat. Researchers repeatedly paired the rat with a loud, startling noise, causing Albert to associate the rat with the noise and eventually fear the rat itself. The white rat was initially a neutral stimulus, meaning Albert didn’t have an innate fear of it. The loud noise was the unconditioned stimulus, which naturally caused fear in a way the unconditioned response in Albert.

Watson argued that only behaviors that can be observed and measured objectively are valid in scientific psychology. He believed that behaviors are learned through conditioning, where provocations in the environment are paired with responses, leading to learned associations. Watson rejected the study of thoughts, feelings, and other internal mental processes, arguing that they are not directly observable and therefore not suitable for scientific study. Watson emphasized the role of environmental factors in shaping behavior, suggesting that individuals can be trained to exhibit specific behaviors through conditioning.

Skinner’s behaviorism theory, also known as radical behaviorism, suggests that all behavior is learned through interactions with the environment, primarily through reinforcement and punishment. This theory emphasizes observable behaviors and argues that internal mental states like thoughts are not relevant for understanding behavior. Skinner’s work focused on challenging conditioning, where behaviors are modified by their consequences. It is built on the assumption that behaviour is influenced by its consequences. Reinforcement theory is the process of shaping behavior by controlling consequences of the behavior. Reinforcement theory proposes that you can change someone’s behaviour by using reinforcement, punishment, and elimination. I give here example of Abraham Lincoln who was the president of the United States in a pivotal moment during the Civil War. Although he was assassinated before completing his term as president, the relentless work ethic and unmatched communication skills that Abraham Lincoln showcased while healing the fractured country made him one of the greatest leaders in U.S. history.

This is rooted in the idea that behavior is the result of conditioning. He believed that behavior is learned through the process of classical conditioning, where behavior is shaped through the association of stimuli in the environment. His discoveries provided a framework for understanding how behaviors are acquired. His experiments primarily involved dogs, but the principles he discovered have far-reaching implications for understanding human behaviour as well. Classical conditioning, the foundation of Pavlov’s theory, involves pairing a neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus to elicit a conditioned response. In one of his famous experiments, Pavlov observed that dogs naturally salivated when presented with food, an unconditioned stimulus. However, through repeated pairings of a neutral stimulus, such as a bell, with the food, the dogs eventually began to associate the bell with the arrival of food. As a result, they started salivating at the sound of the bell alone, even in the absence of the food. This conditioned response demonstrated the formation of a new association between the neutral stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus. Mental conditioning is a process which depends on experience, it takes efforts of training your mind to modify your thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs to accept thinking patterns.

This theory proposes that behaviourism develops through eight stages, each marked by a unique milestone, crisis or challenge that individuals must manage through. These crises involve a struggle between opposing forces, such as trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs Guilt, Industry vs inferiority , identity vs Role Confusion, intimacy vs Isolation, Generativity vs Stagnation and Ego Integrity vs Despair. When individuals successfully resolve each crisis, it leads to the development of specific virtues and psychological strengths, while failure can result in difficulties in future stages Our early life experience is very important in terms of how we grow as individuals. Our identity evolves at various stages of life; how we perceive and present ourselves throughout our lives, as per our own sense of identity; we keep searching and understanding ‘who we are’. Understanding this process can lead people to question their ‘negative’ identity labelled by society. Half of life is spent in making big changes in the way we perceive ourselves. Our personalities keep changing as we resolve crises in life; thus, each experience brings a change within us.

Ii) Learning is a process of trying different responses until the correct one is found and rewarded. Iii) Behaviors followed by satisfying moments are strengthened, while behaviors followed by annoying consequences are weakened. Iv) Frequent practice strengthens connections, while lack of practice weakens them. V) When an individual is ready to act in a particular way, a response is likely to follow.

This theory states that children construct their own learning through organising, categorising and then coding information. He believed that the most effective way to do this is to discover information rather than being told it by a teacher. Jerome Bruner’s theory of cognitive development emphasizes that learning occurs through three modes of representation: enactive, iconic, and symbolic. These modes represent how individuals process and represent knowledge, changing with age with mental and physical development. Bruner believed that children could learn difficult concepts with appropriate instruction, and that learning is a continuous process, not a series of stages. They say children are mirror image of their parents and surrounding. Enactive mode, prevalent in early childhood around 0-3 years, involves learning through direct action and manipulation of objects. For example, a baby might learn about size by comparing different-sized colour crayons. The iconic mode starts around 3-7 years; children begin to use images and mental representations to represent experiences. They might use drawings or pictures to recall events or objects. From about 7 years onward, children develop the ability to use symbols, like language, to represent and organize information. They can understand and use abstract concepts without needing a real visual. Bruner believed that development is a continuous process, not a series of distinct stages.

In simple terms, Sigmond Freud’s theory suggests that human behavior is influenced by unconscious memories, thoughts, and urges. This theory also proposes that the psyche comprises three aspects: the id, ego, and superego. The id is entirely unconscious, while the ego operates in the conscious mind. Behaviorism is primarily associated with the belief that all behaviors are learned through interactions with the environment. It focuses on observable actions, emphasizing the role of stimuli and responses, and rejects the study of internal mental processes. Key figures in behaviorism include John B. Watson and B.F. Skinner.

Abstract

Servant leadership style aligns closely with spiritual principles, consisting of humbleness, empathy, and the well-being of others. Leaders who incorporate spiritual practices into their management style are more likely to create a supportive and inclusive work environment. When an organization has leaders with higher spiritual quotient, aligning of individual employees’ objectives and goal with organizational vision, mission goals and objectives becomes easier. Spiritual faith is a conscious decision of an individual; it is believing in a higher energy (God) which I refer to as Universal Energy. Different religions refer this energy as per their faith; Islam calls it Allah, Christians call it Jesus & Merry, Sikhs call it Guru Granth Sahib, Hindus call it Ram/Krishna/Shakti, Jains call it Mahavir so on. When we give our trust to God, it releases the element of faith inside of us. A person may be high in their Spiritual Quotient (SQ) but may have no religious faith or belief in form of God. Similarly, a person may be religious but low in their SQ. Those seeking meaning form their life and the purpose of life are on their path to attaining that spiritual realization.

Organizational conflict refers to the condition of dispute, backbiting, grapevine, jealousy, hatred leading to disagreement that is caused by the perceived or actual opposition in the needs, interests, and values among people who work together. Organizational conflict hampers the work environment in organizations.

I am writing this paper to emphasize on Spiritual Quotient (SQ) IQ, or spiritual intelligence which helps in resolving organizational conflicts. SQ underlines IQ and EQ. Spiritual intelligence is an ability to access higher meanings, purpose of life, to achieve which one needs to abide by purposes, and unconscious aspects of the self and to be surround by these meanings, values, and purposes in living richer and more creative lives. Signs of high SQ include an ability to think out of the box, humility, and an access to energies that come from something beyond the ego, beyond concerns of I, me, myself.

I have interviewed 15 senior managers across the industries having Head Quarters in Mumbai. All organizations are blue chip companies. My interview carried a brief questionnaire carrying just five parameters: 1. Ability to see beyond 2. Resolving organizational conflicts with ease 3. Integrity 4. Organizational Culture 5. Spiritual Faith

I have listed below the outcomes

Ability to see beyond

60% of the respondents said they could sense something coming in the way of business prior to Covid-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered the world economy and was the largest global economic crisis in more than a century. The crisis led to a dramatic increase in inequality within the haves and have-nots across countries. The emerging economies stumbled, and economically disadvantaged groups needed much more time to recover pandemic-induced losses of income and livelihoods.

The executives of Ambuja Cements and ACC responded that both companies part of Swiss cement major Lafarge Holcim group, collectively contributed ₹3.3 crore to three NGOs to support daily-wagers, migrant labour, slum-dwellers and homeless stranded across the country on account of the lockdown. Ambuja Cement and ACC supported Goonj, an NGO on the forefront of disaster relief with expertise in material management; and Praja Foundation and Mumbai Roti Bank, who are working with labourers and daily wage workers those who had lost their livelihood on account of the country-wide lockdown to protect against the coronavirus. Together, these organisations carried out multi-pronged containment and relief efforts required immediate attention across the country.

Many people seek a sense of purpose and meaning in their work, and integrating spiritual practices and principles into management can help to increase a sense of seeing deeper purpose and meaning for both the individual manager and their team members. Fortune magazine mentions that companies like Starbucks, Google, Southwest Airlines and Staples are integrating spirituality through initiatives such as servant leadership. The magazine introduced spirituality in business as a “large, unorganized, deeply felt and deeply personal movement”. It is happening in small and large companies alike, as dog-eat-dog management models from past decades make way for lively, mutually beneficial relationships that feed the wellbeing of everyone involved in an organization. Soulful leaders recognize that relationships have the power to transform teams and business outcomes.

SQ helps resolving organizational conflicts

55% executives said SQ helps them solve organizational conflicts which lead to the condition of misunderstanding or disagreement that is caused by the perceived or actual opposition in the needs, interests, and values among people who work together. This leads to workplace alienation which brings down productivity. Employers must take strong steps in preventing those feelings in employees. Often when employees are transferred to another department or geographically positioned elsewhere. It’s often observed in some organizations a manager plays game of favouritism: he/she behaves partially with an employee, while others feel left out. When managers play different standards of accountability and performance for subordinates their behaviour becomes destructive and pulls down the employee morale.

The Senior Vice President at Reliance Jio said While “HR should not love people” this may sound counterintuitive given the traditional perception of Human Resources (HR) as the advocate for employees, it points to a more nuanced aspect of HR management. HR professionals are tasked with making impartial & unbiased decisions that benefit both the organization and its employees. Embracing emotional attachment or favouritism can cloud judgment and compromise the fairness of HR practices.

He says spirituality has helped him in maintaining objectivity and neutrality, He ensures that policies, procedures, and decisions are applied consistently and equitably, fostering a culture of fairness and respect in the workplace. The burden of negativity should not be taken forward. Hold on to the lessons learned, not the scars and burdens.

Integrity

The role of a manager should be more of a go getter. He should know all the people not by their skills but also by their psychological orientation of mind. He should have a deep vision in who can execute a task to its best instead of being a typical ‘yes-man’. Individuals with integrity are incorruptible and always uncompromising in the moral and ethical values that they believe in. People with integrity always keep their word, abstaining from lies and excuses, no matter the situation. 50% of respondents said Integrity is difficult to practice among weaklings.

One of the Mid-Level managers of Wipro said he follows in the footsteps of Mr. Azim Premji. He once accompanied Mr. Premji to a Wipro retailer. When Mr. Premji shook hands with the dealer and asked – “How are you doing? Happy? Making Money?” the manager and the dealers melted with the warmth of Premji and instantly generated an emotional connect. The questions asked by Premji were genuine which reflected empathy, were straight from the heart and were powerful testimony to Premji’s belief that every Reseller must profit from his relationship with Wipro.

Mr. Premji genuinely feels that a good Vendor-Reseller relationship is most important for the business. The hallmark of Premji’s style is that his employees, his vendors, dealers can disagree with him privately or in the open; every Wipro Executive has the freedom to execute in his own way, innovate and above all make mistakes. Often those mistakes are costly mistakes. Wipro pays the price for that learning. One thing on which Premji does not compromise is Integrity. It is the cornerstone of Premji’s operating philosophy. He always says that everything in life can be negotiated except Integrity. Integrity is and will always be non-negotiable. He has created a values-driven business, built and scaled in a volatile market environment. Wipro has created thousands of entrepreneurs who in turn have created over 450 plus companies, raised over billion-dollar venture capital.

Today, in the corporate world also most of the organizations and institutions have realized and acknowledged that their human element, what is called ‘human resource’ is not simply intellectual property consisting of human knowledge and skills but is human spirit as well. Corporate have realized that they need to nurture and value the human spirit which is an integral part of leadership. Spirituality is not a mere element which needs reference and regular discussions on it; its practice and application will reduce commotion and misconduct to a greater extent. Lot of awareness is growing in applying spirituality in the workplace.

Organizational culture

He speaks about three levels of organizational culture.

Artifacts include any tangible, evident or verbally identifiable elements in an organization. These include the architecture, beautification of workplace, careful design, layout, fitting and maintenance, built-in space for movement (space, sound, and acoustics), functionality, attractive visuals, elegance, furniture etc. Artifacts include dress codes; explicit dress codes speak a lot about workplace culture. They are varied as workplaces are. It differs as per the nature of the workplace; it is the starting point of defining and determining a dress code. Wearing I-Card and clean dress, well-groomed employees speak a lot about organizations. The employees are organization’s brand ambassadors.

Espoused values are the second layer of the organization’s stated values and rules of behaviour. It is how the members represent the organization both in terms of their behaviour and the shared values. Their interpersonal behaviours and their behaviours with outsiders speak volumes. This is expressed in mission, vision, philosophies and values of the organization. The mission, vision, goals, values need to be displayed nicely in framed posters in strategic locations in organizations. They are official philosophies and statements of identity for the public. A company’s mission statement is essentially its statement of purpose.

The third level is Assumptions which are shared basic assumptions. These are deeply embedded, taken-for-granted behaviours which are usually unconscious, but constitute the deep essence of culture. These assumptions are well integrated in the work culture, that they are easily recognized in actions of the employees and management. The inner aspects of human nature constitute the third level of organization culture. The inner values of individual employees can make or break an organization. Being honest to work, being a well-wisher of the organization, putting in the extra bit matters a lot. Sometimes when employees need to put in late hours, and they refuse, or when female employees are dominated by male employees, or when female employees are harassed by their bosses it portrays the culture. The organizations follow certain practices, which are not discussed often but understood on their own. Such behaviours form the third level of the organization culture.

Zappos.com is an online shoe and clothing shop currently based in Las Vegas, Nevada. In July 2009, the company announced it would be acquired by Amazon.com in an all-stock deal worth about $1.2 billion. Since its founding in 1999, it has become one of the world’s largest online shoe stores. Zappos has become almost as well known for its culture as it is for the shoes that it sells online. How does Zappos culture look like? It believes in delivering an experience of ‘WOW’ through service. The company believes in embracing change constantly. It believes in creating fun and weirdness among the employees. Weirdness is necessary for creating innovation. It encourages its employees to be adventurous, creative and open-minded and pursue learning. The organization believes in building honest relationship with its employees with transparent communication. In true sense Zappos behaves like a close-knit family.

When it comes to hiring employees, it starts with a cultural fit interview, which carries half the weight of hiring the candidate. New employees are offered $2,000 to quit after the first week of training if they decide the job isn’t for them. 10 core values of the company are instilled in every team member. Employee raises come from workers who pass skills tests and exhibit increased capability, not from office politics. Portions of the budget are dedicated to employee team building and culture promotion. The organization passes on great benefits and a workplace that is fun and dedicated to making customers happy all fit in with the Zappos approach to company culture, where one gets the company culture right, great customer service and a great brand will happen on its own. Zappos has established what the company culture is, and fitting into that culture is the most important thing managers look before hiring.

Why Amazon acquired Zappos? Zappos had a lot going for it. The company survived the dot-com crash, and sales were growing. The organizational culture matters.

Spiritual Faith

55 % respondents said they believe in spirituality and that has helped them grow personally and professionally in the organizations. A spiritual workplace is one where you find meaning, value and motivation in one’s work beyond salary and performance measurement. It is about people finding a sense of oneness and togetherness in an organization. Indira Nooyi – Former CEO of Pepsi used to keep a statue of the Hindu deity Ganesha; the God of Auspicious Beginnings typically depicted with head of an elephant with one broken tusk in her office. Nooyi, is famously candid about the difficulties women face balancing family, children, and careers, saying that women “pretend we can have it all.” The mother of two daughters cited her Hindu faith as a source of solace from the storms of guilt and stress.

Pierre Omidyar the Former-CEO of the online auction site e-Bay founded in 1995,
Pierre Omidyar, remains chairman of the company and a prominent public figure in the areas of innovation, technology, and media.
Donnie Smith, CEO of Tyson Foods since 2009, does just that at Cross Church, a Southern Baptist congregation in Springdale, Arkansas, the city where the company is headquartered. “He not only teaches the Bible, but he also lives the Bible,” the Rev. Ronnie Floyd, senior pastor at Cross Church and the recently named president of the Southern Baptist Convention, told Fortune. “He’s just a passionate leader in his faith as well as in the corporate setting,” Floyd said. Donnie Smith says he carries his faith with him in everything he does, including his business life. In an interview with Wall Street Journal in 2010 Smith said that hi faith influences, what he does.

Conclusion

When organizations face a short supply of vision among leaders, it loses its ground because the leaders are interested in material pursuit, authority and power. As humans we get wrong ideas about so many aspects; each of us is busy trying to prove our worth. Each one of us is trying to be better than somebody, how many of us have destroyed ourselves in the rat race. How many of us have wasted our time, efforts, energy and almost everything on this planet just trying to look a little better than somebody else. It is such a horrible waste of life, because you will never blossom into your full potential if you keep thinking how to be better than somebody. SQ helps us in fixing our priorities of life; it helps us in understanding do the best that we can–what must happen will happen.

It is worth mentioning here that according to the recent Pew Research Centre, USA, report, one in five Americans identify themselves as “spiritual but not religious.” In other words, they have some feeling regarding something greater existing in the world, but they feel allergic to religious institutions. But it is also worth recognizing that as we approach Passover and Easter, it’s important to remember that it is institutions and not abstract feelings that tie a community together and lead to meaningful change. Religion brings along with its institutional disillusionment. They act poky and dictatorial; they can both enable and shield wrongdoers. They frustrate our spiritual ideas and desires by asking us to submit to the will of others.

Abraham Maslow had suggested in his ‘Need Hierarchy’ model that as nations and their populations became more affluent, so would their spiritual hunger become stronger.

Faith can move mountains

I am a follower of Nelson Mandela. His leadership was deeply rooted in spiritual intelligence, particularly in his capacity for compassion. Despite spending 27 years of imprisonment under brutal conditions, Mandela did not emerge with a heart full of bitterness, but with a spirit of reconciliation and a vision for a united South Africa.

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Rahasya was written in Marathi language by Indian social reformer and independence activist Bal Gangadhar Tilak while he was in prison at Mandalay, Burma. Tilak was a visionary leader who fought for liberating India from clutches of Britishers. I see him as man of intellectual capabilities, emotional strength, and spirited values.

Employers should ensure a happy work environment if they want to retain their employees. This will help in creating client delight, sustaining the current projects, acquiring new clients, business growth and business expansion. Accept new norms, flexibility for all the employees, build a vision for all employees - visualise the growth path in the company, motivate employees to do better. Certainly, monetary benefits play a major role in retaining employees. But organisations surely can bring new cultures and vibrancy to the work environment to retain employees.

Employee retention is one of the main challenges for any organization; you may call it employee turnover, you may call it attrition, or churn, it is a big challenge for organization to retain talent. When talented and experienced people quit organizations, it puts a big strain on the productivity by affecting organization’s bottom line. To solve the employee retention problem, you must first understand the challenges involved.

With young professionals getting increasingly restless the challenge is not only to retain them but also to identify the future leaders among this talent pool. For example, L&T is facing the crisis of identifying the next line of leaders. Recently, the company increased the retirement age for CMD from 65 years to 70 years and 62 to 67 years for the other directors. According to a former employee, earlier a person would reach the level of DGM and at the most AGM level at the time of retirement.

Recruitment is a business function that requires business objectives, perspective, expertise, and the ability to find the right match that fits the running position. The hiring manager makes the final decision on who gets hired, while the recruiter manages the process, laying the foundation for hiring the right people. Any organization’s HR role is to convince the prospect with diplomacy and marketing skills and align the recruitment procedure to benefit the organization for a longer period. During the recruitment process, it is hard to grab the ideal candidate’s attention because the good ones are getting multiple offers simultaneously, there is a shortage of wholly qualified candidates the ones who are ready to take on the job.

With social media doing the searching of candidates which is shared by many other organizations tracking the success rate of recruitment has become very difficult. Organizations take time making a candidate go through multiple stages. Multiple stages of screening make it difficult for employers to close the position. Developing a data-driven mindset for hiring for various positions is a major challenge faced in talent acquisition.

Why 80,000 employees leave Infosys between January and March 2022? Top reason is salary. Infosys didn’t bother to provide enough salary hikes to its employees who started looking for opportunities elsewhere. It led to the ‘Big Quit.’ The world today is experiencing the era of the ‘Big Quit’ or the ‘Great Resignation’. There are organizations paying better salaries but are experiencing Big Quit.

Companies often struggle to retain talent due to various reasons. Common pitfalls include inadequate career development, lack of recognition, and not addressing work-life balance. Understanding and tackling these issues can help businesses keep their valuable employees.

Anand Mahindra advocated for liberal arts, stressed work quality over hours, by cheekily countering L&T chief’s 90-hour work week remark. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has once again captured attention with his thoughts on liberal arts education and work-life balance. Mahindra gives importance to a person’s work-life balance. Work-life balance is a key part of a healthy and productive work environment. An individual who achieves this balance successfully is ready to dedicate an equal amount of time to work-related tasks and personal matters without experiencing stress.

Speaking at an event, Mahindra passionately advocated for the importance of arts and culture in professional decision-making. “Even if you’re an engineer or an MBA, you must study arts and culture,” he said, highlighting the role of a well-rounded education. “We support art and culture because I believe it helps make better decisions by engaging the whole brain.” Mahindra stressed that understanding arts and culture enhances decision-making. “If you’re not spending time at home, with friends, or reading, how will you bring the right inputs to your decisions?” he questioned.

Talent retention is the process of keeping your best employees from leaving. Companies need to have a strategy to retain their top talent, as losing talented employees can be costly and disruptive. One study identifies that career growth, workplace well-being, competition within the industry, globalisation and the new employment landscape are the challenges of talent retention. Employees often cite a lack of career growth opportunities as one of the main reasons for leaving their jobs. Besides, lack of work-life balance, feeling unappreciated, low pay, and lack of work culture fit are other reasons that contribute to attrition. The attrition rate is increasing even more due to unknown reasons in a post-pandemic world.

The pandemic has made almost everyone travel back to their home / native places. And this has made the employees preferring the hybrid work culture. People like to stay home and work for a few hours. This helps them to balance their work-life time. Moreover, the hectic daily commute is saved on a large scale. So, the productivity level is retained, and many resources are saved. That’s why many employees are preferring the hybrid or remote work module, these days.

Many people have found that flexible working hours are vital for ensuring work-life balance. Hence, instead of a fixed time, employees prefer to switch to flexible working hours. If the company is not allowing flexible hours, employees are preferring to switch the company rather. Another fact is, during the lockdown, many people found an alternative way to earn through their hobbies or skills. Social media platforms and online opportunities opened many doors of revenue for people around the world. And people are exploring many new entrepreneurship opportunities.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought on high levels of upheaval and introspection, causing people to re-examine their priorities. In a new Indeed survey of 1,005 people who voluntarily resigned from at least two jobs since March 2020, 92% said the pandemic made them feel life is too short to stay in a job they weren’t passionate about.

People have become more aware of the social impacts and thus started working on social causes. Having migrated to their hometown, many people have found a way to earn through agriculture and have shifted their focus to agriculture. Hence, such people also prefer the work from the home module.

Despite its financial success, Reliance Industries faces a persistent issue: high employee turnover. The biggest shortcoming employees face in Reliance is in areas such as work-life balance, career development, and work environment. While competitive salaries fail to retain talent, solutions lie in increasing employee engagement, empowering employees, and cultivating a positive culture. Reliance needs to address employee retention issues and secure a more loyal workforce. By focusing on employee well-being and career development, Reliance can maintain its position as a top employer while reaping the benefits of a stable and dedicated workforce.

Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL) faced challenges in meeting changing employee expectations. As competition and demands increased, HUL fell from being the top dream employer. Younger employees expected quicker career growth and more flexible work arrangements than HUL’s traditional model provided. Another big reason for quitting multiple jobs among the younger generations is they want instant gratification, they expect a pat on back plus rise in salary, plus promotion all of this instantly.

Employers should ensure a happy work environment if they want to retain their employees. This will help in creating client delight, sustaining the current projects, acquiring new clients, business growth and business expansion. Accept new norms, flexibility for all the employees, build a vision for all employees – visualise the growth path in the company, motivate employees to do better. Certainly, monetary benefits play a major role in retaining employees. But organisations surely can bring new cultures and vibrancy to the work environment to retain employees.

Cultural intelligence is essential for leaders, especially those operating in international environments. It enables them to understand how to effectively manage diverse teams, navigate challenges, and lead organizations toward success. Cultural intelligence is becoming an increasingly important skill in business because of how it impacts team building. One of the best parts of managing a team is getting to work with team members with each bringing a unique perspective and skillset to the table. Learning to lead with cross-cultural empathy, factor in different cultural backgrounds, and come to the table with cultural knowledge are all ways to improve your leadership skills.

Multicultural teams benefit from a diversity of opinion. To unlock the impact of a diverse team and build team synergy, you need to manage and encourage teamwork. That’s where a higher CQ (Cultural Quotient) comes in.

In today’s interconnected and globalised business landscape, cultural sensitivity is not just a virtue but a strategically imperative for leaders. The ability to lead with cultural sensitivity has become a defining trait of successful leadership. It’s not merely about understanding different cultures; it’s about embracing diversity, fostering inclusion, and leveraging.

Cultural misunderstanding in the workplace is a miscommunication between individuals of different cultural backgrounds, which can lead to misinterpretations and negative consequences. It can occur when people assume that their own culture’s customs and norms are universal. It also arises when there are differences in language, values, beliefs, and expectations. At times even hand gestures are misunderstood by diverse cultural employees.

Cultural misunderstandings can be harmful to an organization, as they can lead to confusion, conflict, and even decreased productivity.

Cultural sensitivity involves awareness, respect, and consideration of the values, beliefs, norms, customs, and traditions of diverse cultures. In global organizations this extends beyond the organisation’s internal culture to encompass the multicultural aspects of the customer base, employees, and partners worldwide.

For example, some team members are probably more comfortable with direct communication and feedback, whereas you might have other team members who are more comfortable with indirect feedback. Identifying what each team member needs to feel heard and welcomed at work is the best way to make them feel comfortable in a team. Many businesses operate on a global scale, serving customers from different regions, languages, and cultures. Cultural sensitivity enables CXOs to create experiences that resonate with diverse customer segments.

P&G is driven to make life better, not just within the company, but across the globe. P&G strives to make life easy of their employees who come from diversified countries, their consumers, and for people everywhere. As a part of the P&G team, everyone is committed to share that commitment. The organizations oversee teams that often span multiple countries and cultures. Being culturally sensitive fosters a more inclusive and collaborative work environment, driving innovation and employee satisfaction.

P&G aims to be a model global corporate citizen. As organisations expand into new markets, understanding and respecting local cultures is critical for market entry and growth.
The company believes in transparency in its business dealings, and it works to support good causes. All over world wherever P&G has its presence it strives to protect the environment and provide an appealing place to work to its employees; they are treated well and are given the opportunity to be all that they can be.

P&G hires people with high IQ, and at the early stages of career, employees have good opportunities to learn and grow. Upward mobility is not so easy. The management structure grows mostly from within.

Three billion times a day, P&G brands touch the lives of people around the world. This happens because P&G provides branded products of superior quality and value to improve the lives of the world’s consumers. Mishandling cultural nuances can lead to reputational damage. CXOs must ensure that their organisations are seen as culturally aware and respectful. This results in leadership sales, profit and value creation, allowing employees, shareholders and the communities in which we operate to prosper. Cultural sensitivity is not a static quality but a continuous journey of learning and adaptation.

The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) is a brand giant. It also makes pet food and water filters and produces soap operas. Some 25 of P&G’s brands are billion-dollar sellers, including Gillette Fusion, Always/Whisper, Braun, Bounty, Charmin, Crest, Downy/Lenor, Folgers (which it reportedly plans to spin off), Gillette, Iams, Olay, Pampers, Pantene, Pringles, Tide, and Wella, among others.

P&G consists of over 138,000 employees working in over 80 countries. In P&G, every employee’s culture is respected. Their commitment begins with P&G’s Purpose, values and principles, in which sustainability is embedded, and manifests itself in a systemic and long-term way. They try to make their company better. At P&G the workplace is made as inclusive as possible.

leaders need to be culturally sensitive because it helps them build strong teams, improve communication, and foster innovation. Leaders who are culturally sensitive can create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. This can improve morale and collaboration, and lead to better performance. They can improve communication by being mindful of language barriers and recognize how people from different cultures communicate. Foster innovation. Good leaders have leveraged on cultural diversity as a strategic asset to foster innovation and learning. This helps them to build better client relationships. When leaders respect other’s culture, they can mitigate risks. Leaders can avoid cultural insensitivity and make informed decisions to mitigate reputation damage and financial losses.

McDonald’s, one of the world’s most recognizable brands, has successfully implemented a “Think Global, Act Local” approach to cultural sensitivity. This strategy recognizes that while McDonald’s is a global brand, the customer experience must be adapted to local cultures. Here are key aspects of McDonald’s approach are as follows:

Japanese philosophy has historically been a fusion of both indigenous Shinto and continental religions, such as Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Shinto revolves around supernatural entities called the kami (angels, demons, dragon, fairy, devil etc.). The kami is believed to occupy all things, including forces of nature and prominent landscape locations. The kami are worshipped at kami dana – household altar and family shrines. Buddhists believe that human life is a cycle of suffering and rebirth, but that if one achieves a state of enlightenment (nirvana), the cycle of birth and death gets over. Taoism holds that humans and animals should live in balance with the Tao, or the universe. Taoists believe in spiritual immortality, where the spirit of the body joins the universe after death. Confucianism built on an ancient religious foundation to establish the social values, institutions, and transcendent ideals of traditional Chinese society.

This passage speaks about the Japanese term “Gaman,” which translates to mean “patience, perseverance and tolerance,” refers to continuing difficult situations with self-control and dignity. A Zen Buddhist teaching, Gaman is a strategy of remaining resilient and patience during hard times which is characteristic of emotional maturity. It emphasises on perseverance and self-discipline in the face of hardship or adversity. Gaman is about staying strong and not giving up, even in difficult circumstances.

The Japanese philosophies about acceptance and improvement have been popular globally. Many rich and famous people have been following to live a wholesome life by following Japanese philosophy.

Indian Billionaire Harsh Mariwala is one amongst many. The Marico Chairman transformed his brand Marico among the top ten in India and global brand in the FMCG sector. Marico has a strong presence in the personal care, food, and beverage industries, with major brands including Saffola, Parachute, Hair & Care, Nihar, Livon, Set Wet, Mediker, and Revive. Mariwala believes in the seven Japanese concepts Kaizen, Ikigai, Oubaitori, Wabi-Sabi, Hara-Hachi Bu, Shikata Gai Na, and Shin Rin Yeku, which he lives by. According to Mariwala the term Gaman is the art of surviving difficulties with patience and dignity. “It is a virtue to persevere during seemingly unbearable times and display emotional maturity, discipline and self-control. You have a greater capacity for patience than you believe.” He set up the consumer products business practically from scratch. Over the past four decades, he has not only built Marico into one of the leading FMCG companies in the country but has also transformed what was essentially a family-managed business into a professionally managed one. Mariwala, who has seen the FMCG space transform over the past few years, says Marico views every disruption as an opportunity. He says he has practiced Daman inherently.

Gaman is a powerful concept that can help individuals cultivate a sense of inner strength and resilience in the face of adversity which Japanese have developped. on July 16 1945, the nuclear age began with the world’s first nuclear weapons test explosion in the New Mexico desert. Three weeks later US attacked with the atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In minutes, the city vanished. The explosion produced a supersonic shock wave followed by extreme winds that remained above hurricane force over three kilometers from ground zero. A secondary and equally devastating reverse wind followed, flattening and severely damaging homes and buildings several kilometers further away. The intense heat of the Hiroshima bomb reached several million degrees Celsius and scorched flesh and other flammable materials over three kilometers away. Many of those who survived the nuclear attacks would die from radiation-induced illnesses for years to come. Three days later atomic bomb used at Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945, was “Fat Man”. The bomb was dropped by a USAAF B-29 airplane named “Bockscar”, piloted by U.S. Army Air Force Major Charles Sweeney. The bomb weighed 10,000 pounds and had a diameter of 60 inches. It utilized the explosive power of dynamite to create pressure on a ball of Plutonium. The bomb was called ‘Fat Man’. Albert Einstein said after the Hiroshima, Nagasaki bombing that “The time has come now, when man must give up war. It is no longer rational to solve international problems by resorting to war.”

Due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is substantially prone to earthquakes and tsunami, having the highest natural disaster risk in the developed world. With numerous hardships facing natural disasters, foreign attacks, Japan has strongly built its foundation of righteous existence and adopted the philosophy of Buddhism through some time-tested principles of the art of living in the Japanese context which holds good for all cultures and humanity.

Japanese are extremely hard-working people by adopting the philosophy of Daman. They have faced everything from nuclear attack, earthquakes to tsunamis, but they’re emerge more stronger than ever. Japanese have revolutionized the electronic industry: Canon, Casio, Citizen, Fujifilm , Fujitsu, Hitachi ,Olympus, Sony, Panasonic, Nikon etc.

In true sense Japanese have endured hardships with patience and dignity, individuals can find meaning and purpose in the experience and use it as an opportunity for personal growth and transformation. Gaman can be applied in many ways in practical life, from the way we approach personal challenges to the way we respond to societal issues. In Japan, Gaman has been used to describe the stoical resilience of individuals during times of adversity, such as natural disasters, economic hardships, and war.

In 2011 when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake and tsunami that struck Tōhoku, killing nearly 16,000 people in Japan, there were no reports of looting or arbitrary price scraping. Instead of panic and fear, the attitude in Japan after the devastating natural disaster seemed to be one of calmness and grit. The Gaman mentality is at the base of that attitude. In fact, resilience during vulnerability and chaotic acceptance helped Japan through clear and lawful civility that derives from Gaman.

In Japanese culture, showing Gaman is considered a sign of maturity and strength. It’s taught to children very early elementary school. Gaman is trained early in life. In Japan, patience and perseverance are part of education from elementary school.

In the complex world of Sales & Marketing across FMCG, Healthcare, NBFC, and Logistics sectors, I have navigated through 22 years of dynamic encounters with customers whose rationality seems as fluid as the markets they inhabit. The unpredictability of consumer whims has been both a challenge and a fascination, prompting me to delve deeper into the intricate realm of consumer behaviour—a discipline where perceptions, beliefs, emotions, and social influences converge to shape purchasing decisions.

Consumer behaviour, rooted in psychology, transcends mere transactions; it unfolds as a tapestry of human desires and motivations. From deciphering elusive wants to decoding the sway of social persuasions, this sub-discipline offers profound insights essential for any strategist in today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) marketplace.

My journey, however, did not end with field experiences alone. For the past 24 years, I have embraced a parallel path as a Professor of Marketing Management, witnessing firsthand the evolution of academia to meet the demands of an ever-changing global landscape. The Indian market, an ’emerging’ force, spurred me to contribute to this evolving narrative through a book that not only connects theoretical frameworks of consumer behaviour but also enriches them with Indian context, examples, and case studies.

This book is a culmination of insights gleaned from interactions with students—each a catalyst for my own learning journey. Their diverse perspectives and probing questions have shaped not only my teachings but also this manuscript, which seeks to bridge academic rigor with practical relevance.

The book has been published by Kabdwal Book International.

I extend my deepest gratitude to all my students and colleagues, the customers whom I have sold products, competitors, my critics, my supporters all of them.

As you embark on this exploration of consumer behaviour, may these pages not only inform but also inspire new strategies, innovations, and a deeper appreciation for the intricate dance between consumers and markets. Join me in unravelling the mysteries of consumer behaviour—a journey where understanding leads to innovation and where every interaction offers a new revelation.

HAPPY READING!!!

Outsourcing is the business practice of contracting with a party outside a company to perform services or create goods that usually were traditionally performed in-house by the company’s own employees and staff. Outsourcing is a practice usually started by companies as a cost-cutting measure. Particularly, the non-core areas such as sanitation, security, household, pantry, etc are outsourced by a company. The company makes a formal agreement with the contracted agencies. These contracted agencies are specialized agencies. Services outsourcing in India started in the 1980s and rapidly accelerated in the ’90s. In today’s world where information technology has become critical to business, the meaning of outsourcing has undergone a drastic change over the years.

When organizations decide to go international, they look for ways to tap into new markets and expand their operations with help of outsourcing. Global outsourcing helps businesses get services from countries with lower labour costs, save money and stay competitive.

Organizations prefer lean structures; lean organisations often have cross-functional teams, flexible job roles, and a strong commitment to continuous improvement. This structure aligns with Lean principles, fostering a culture of efficiency, waste reduction, and customer-centricity. And lean organizations prefer outsourcing to cut down on wastage of any sort, especially lean organizations cut costs by employing minimum labor. They also prefer saving on operational costs. Following are some reasons why outsourcing has gained importance in organizations:

Multitasking is inevitable

Multitasking usually hurts employee’s productivity. As a result, organizations have difficulty motivating them and getting the required quality output in their work, thus affecting customer satisfaction. Outsourcing’s potential for further savings is one of the main reasons it is a sought-after strategy. An eight-hour shift could be easily consumed by routine tasks such as answering emails, data encoding, bookkeeping, filing, record keeping etc. These tasks can drain the energy, effort, and creativity of a team, eventually resulting in more employees leaving organization. Employee retention is a big challenge. This is one of the reasons why companies outsource time-consuming tasks to free up their team’s time so they can take on the core aspects of their responsibilities.

Focus on core competencies

The entire idea of an outsourcing strategy is to save money, time, and effort to focus on the core competency of a business. Organizations can focus on their core competencies by delegating small, day-to-day tasks to outsourcing firms. When used effectively, this gives them some control to fight competitors, plus allow employees work-life balance.

Why outsourcing?

Outsourcing, and at times offshoring (the practice of relocating business processes or work functions to another country to cut costs and increase efficiency) remains to be an integral and cost-effective part. Whether outsourcing a business process or manufacturing services, teaming up with an external outsourcing partner allows organizations with several advantages. Most companies flourish when they partner with qualified professionals from external firms. In response to the sudden boom in the industry, organizations have responded positively to the service provided by outsourcing agencies.

Outsourcing is essential globally as companies pave the way to gain access to better services. It ensures prospective employees do not waste their process potential and skills, whether on the other side of the world or behind a couple of time zones.

Outsourcing

India is preferred outsourcing centre

India is becoming the world’s largest outsourcing centre. In the global market, all multinational corporations and other large corporations want to reduce their variable and fixed overheads, which has a huge impact on their profits. Information Technology is India’s core competency, but other than IT services, India is a well-known outsourcing nation that also supplies HR processes, financial solutions, data management service, and more. With so many services the country can offer, it is not surprising that many global companies are attracted to India. The following reasons make India an attractive outsourcing centre.

Qualified and skilled manpower

When compared to other countries, India has the largest workforce. On the other hand, the more highly skilled labor is costly to company’s payroll. To avoid rising payroll costs while lowering other expenses, India is the best place to outsource work. India has more work-friendly environment that provides a development model for multinational corporations. The time zone variations work out as the biggest advantage for outsourcing to India. It is time saving.

Time zone advantage

Due to time zone differences, work is completed at night, resulting in increased efficiency. India’s time zone is advantageous for businesses located in other parts of the world, such as the United States and Europe get advantage in engaging Indian companies in outsourcing. The time difference allows Indian outsourcing companies to provide 24-hour operations, ensuring that projects are completed faster and more efficiently.

Young and English literate labor

India has highest English speaking and very young workforce. Outsourcing problems typically arise when there is a lack of understanding due to a language barrier. However, because English is the medium of instruction in most higher education institutions, many Indians speak fluent or native-level English. This is one reason why foreign companies prefer Indian employees. The Indian workforce is ideal for customer support services because they have no trouble conversing with end-users and addressing their concerns.

Types of outsourcing:

Outsourcing is a multifaceted business strategy, and companies often engage in various types of outsourcing depending on their specific needs and objectives. Understanding these different categories provides insights into the diverse ways businesses can use external power to enhance efficiency while focusing on their core competencies.

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)

Payroll processing services, data processing services and tax solutions are examples of horizontal BPO. Vertical BPO concentrates on functional services in specific industry domains such as manufacturing, retail, finance and accounting services and healthcare. Business Process Outsourcing involves contracting out specific non-core business functions to external service providers. Infosys is one of the leading outsourcing companies in India as per NASSCOM, it provides services and operations in Brazil, China, Philippines, Europe, and Australia. As of June 2023, it has over 57,000 employees worldwide and has made an annual revenue of over 1 billion USD in 2022.

It specializes in providing services such as Business Transformation, Master Data Management, Customer Care Solutions, Robotic Process Automation, Finance and Accounting, Annotation, and Legal Services among others. Its solutions include Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Robotics, Data Analytics, AI solutions, and other outsourcing and consultancy solutions.

Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO)

Information Technology Outsourcing focuses on delegating technology-related tasks and responsibilities to external vendors. This includes software development, infrastructure management, network maintenance, and technical support. ITO facilitates companies to stay technologically competitive while leveraging expertise and cost advantages offered by external specialists. There are other aspects as well that we can include in IT outsourcing. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), utility systems, and cloud-based services are all examples of IT outsourcing services. Several types of industry-specific software development are also included in IT outsourcing such as application development, mobile, web design, web app development, and more. Wipro is one of the leading Big Tech companies. Wipro’s capabilities range across cloud computing, computer security, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, robotics, data analytics, and other technology consulting services to customers in 167 countries.

Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO)

Knowledge Process Outsourcing involves outsourcing more complex, knowledge-intensive tasks that require specialized expertise. This often includes research and development, data analysis, and other high-level cognitive activities. Companies choose KPO to access domain-specific knowledge, innovation, and advanced analytical capabilities. Genpact is a leading global KPO services firm that started its humble beginnings in 1997 as a business unit within General Electric to being a publicly traded company ten years later. The firm runs some of the most complex business process operations primarily for Global Fortune 500 companies. Genpact serves various industries such as commercial and consumer banking, consumer goods, energy, healthcare, industrial manufacturing, and retails.

Manufacturing outsourcing

Manufacturing outsourcing result in contracting the production of goods to external suppliers. This is particularly common in industries such as electronics, apparel, FMCG and automotive. Companies outsource manufacturing to take advantage of cost savings, global supply chains, and specialized production capabilities. In India, Coca-Cola works with various bottling partners that manufacture and distribute beverages for the company. Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) is among the largest bottling manufacturers in the country with 16 factories; additionally, it maintains eight contract parking facilities, 20 lakh sq ft of warehousing. It manufactures and sells 60 different products across seven categories such as Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Sprite, Minute Maid, Maaza, Smart Water, Kinley, Limca, Fanta. The company has 115 factories in India, and it is outsourcing services – bottling for more than 20 global beverages.

Accounting

It is one of the most common areas where small businesses choose to outsource. It takes a lot of time and skills to learn all the processes and compliance standards a company requires to meet. However, a skilled accountant can often manage this area for multiple businesses at once. This increases efficiency and saves organization’s money. Patron Accounting LLP is an ISO certified accounting firm based in India and has successfully registered 100+ Foreign Companies in India. Their clients are based out from Dubai, Germany, Australia, USA, UK, Russia & other parts of the worlds.

Marketing & Sales

When it’s time to grow business, an outside marketing firm can be very useful to help quickly. The seven functions of marketing are marketing information management, financing, product and service management, pricing, promotion, selling, and distribution. To help the business grow, we need each area to come together and build a productive marketing approach. Indian pharma firm, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals has picked up its second marketing partner in the US. Last year it tied up with Par Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of US-based Pharmaceutical Resources, for marketing its oral cephalosporin formulations in the US.

Administrative Tasks

When running a business, it is quite demanding for organizations to perform administrative tasks on their own. It starts from taking phone calls, schedule customer appointments, make travel arrangements, manage email accounts, facilitate staff, handle payrolls and much more. Post Covid, outsourcing is in practice across the globe. The globalization of outsourced goods and services is highly effective in helping enterprises to drive their profitability. A lot many factors are instrumental in increasing its widespread acceptance. Cheaper salaries/wages, impressive currency exchange rates, and a wider range of facilities are the prominent reasons for its growing success. It is surprising to note that over 67% of businesses now outsource their administrative activities to third parties.

Customer Service

For businesses that deal with customers mainly online or over the phone, prefer to outsource their customer service strategy to a call centre or chat service. Customer Satisfaction is the top goal for every business. The key criterion in achieving this is timely transfer of information. Call Centres typically assist organizations in achieving this. Genpact Ltd, WNS Global Services, 3i Infotech, TCS BPO, IBM Daksh and 24/7 Customer Pvt Ltd some of the famous customer care service providers.

Shipping and Logistics

Today e-commerce is become part of our life. The arrival of e-commerce and m-commerce (mobile) has transformed the entire retail sector. Retailers are tapping multiple channels for selling their merchandise; from traditional stores, using catalogue, through the internet and more and more via smart phones and tablets, no stone is left unturned. For surviving the competition in the e-commerce world distribution has become key component of the business. Supply chain and logistics experts have become key players. They assist in services right from strategic locations for Distribution Centres (DC). Outsourcing logistics is when a company uses an external provider (third-party 3PL, fourth party 4PL) to handle various supply chain functions. These can include a mix of shipping, storing, packing and/or delivering a company’s physical goods, from raw materials all the way to the finished product.

Blue Dart Express Ltd. an Indian logistics company is South Asia’s premier express air, integrated transportation & distribution company. It offers secure and reliable delivery of consignments to over 55,400+ locations in India. Blue Dart is a provider of choice for its stakeholders due to its customer centric approach and aims to further strengthen this partnership. As part of DHL Group’s DHL eCommerce division, Blue Dart accesses the largest and most comprehensive express and logistics network worldwide, covering over 220 countries and territories, and offers an entire spectrum of distribution services including air express, freight forwarding, supply chain solutions, customs clearance etc. It offers a complete suite of online services for shipment preparation, package tracking, shipment rates and tools for international shippers and small businesses.

Research

Global industries have realized that apart from technical support and software development, India is also a great place to outsource research and analysis services. Presence of specialized resources with multi-domain expertise, combined with exceptional processes have made India an ideal outsourcing destination for high-end processes like financial research analysis, market research analysis, and business research analysis. Today, India has taken over other outsourcing destinations like China, Russia, and the Czech Republic because India provides highest cost savings, excellent operational efficiency, access to skilled professionals, and quality services.

The present and future of the pharma companies will see a huge R&D, sales and marketing network spread across geographies, and their infrastructural costs can grow exponentially. Therefore, pharma companies need to adopt technology that can offer dynamic lines of communication between the global markets and their manufacturing and research centres in India. Ultimately, India’s growth as a global player depends on its ability to overcome challenges and given the scenario outlined, integrating, and facilitating cost-effective communication is a major benefit for India.

Human Resources

Human resources encompass any tasks in a business related to hiring, onboarding, or managing the team. The most common type of outsourcing in this area is to work with a recruiting service to bring in qualified candidates for a new position. However, there are options for outsourcing training, benefits administration, payroll, and time and attendance issues as well. Human Resource Outsourcing is a practice in which an organization hires a third-party organisation to handle its human resources activities and administrative tasks. In other words, HR outsourcing is the process of receiving work previously completed by corporate personnel from sources outside the company. ABC Consultants in India is among the top 10 HR Outsourcing companies. They are one of the best leading recruitment brands of India who have shaped the career of 1,65,000 professionals in 50 years.
